Anxiety and panic attacks and stress, yes. I was, whilst always thinking I was revolting against it in my own curious way, a perfect daughter of the patriarchy which told me I must achieve, achieve, achieve in order to be loved and valued. It's been a lifelong struggle (Journey, when I'm feeling positive :-) ) and only now, all these decades later, am I beginning to understand - mostly through the world steadfastly refusing to dance to my very determined tune - all that I can live without almost everyting it tells me I need. Our needs are so simple, really. And the more we lose of the things that this world tells us are necessary, the more deeply connected and happier we become. You have learned this, and value this, so much earlier in your life than I did. And yet in a world this uncertain, youth always brings more fear. At my age, you know you'll survive; the question is only how gracefully you'll manage it. Truth is, I'm not entirely sure what my point is here, and perhaps that's another element of grace I've learned with age; there doesn't have to be one. Anxiety and stress presupposes that by responding, you can control what happens to you, the world around you. I think perhaps it's only at the point where you lose control utterly, or realise through trauma or tragedy that you never had it in the first place, that some element of grace descends. Not resignation: grace. The grace to wholeheartedly witness a world in decline whilst refusing to participate in its atrocities. To give up (as you did) a dayjob and live from the deep and beautiful creative heart of yourself, as a small act of dissent. The world is recreated and revisioned through such small acts of dissent. Dissent comes from disatisfaction and distress; such feelings are necessary to creativity, for sure. But the world will be the world whether you are anxious or not. I think you have more of a headstart than most in understanding that the only possible response in the face of it is to create beauty as a small act of dissent. You do it so beautifully! By the time you are as old as I am you will be so very wise. Believe in that, and keep telling the stories. Even old storytelling fogies like me find strength in it. I'm beaming some of that strength back to you from the hills of Donegal!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2231002302671100139.post-87878686457403799352015-06-28T08:20:30.018-07:002015-06-28T08:20:30.018-07:00Sylvia,

Thank you for putting it on to paper and reminding us how incredibly important this work is. And thank you for being open and sharing...I can completely relate to what you are saying. Whenever I am feeling overwhelmed with the chaos and violence happening in the world, I remind myself that healing begins with self. As long as I am looking deeply within and following my own heart I am putting that energy out into the collective consciousness. I feel we absolutely must remember how to move through this world slowly, with intention and presence. I am enjoying Elk Lines very much and I am definitely going to sign up for Morningstory! Would love to know the source (or exact quote) of the idea of culture stealing our selves away by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. So poignant, and so true. I feel it daily, that plucking away of what is really important, the clarity and motivation of morning dissipating as the sun rises.
